This is the second of a series of three articles where we discuss and review some basic search engine optimization tips that can be used by any webmaster out there to try and get better ranking and positions on the search engines. This time we will talk about the juice that makes the internet flow, links. So much has been said about links, there are many different opinions and views on links, and so much effort is invested daily in links that just addressing this issue makes one shiver in fear.
The simple fact is that links dictate much of what the search engines think of any given site, they serve as big signs pointing to a site saying “this site is about charity organizations, if you want to know more about them, that's probably the place you need to go”, in a natural way this is almost like our own popularity as people, in the workplace we are known for a particular expertise or ability, the people who know us and have seen us succeed in performing that ability will point others to us and say “he is a wonderful golf player, I have seen him sink thirty foot putts and drive the ball out of the range”.
The basic principle of keeping it as simple and personal as the last example helps a lot of webmasters develop a linking strategy, before playing a link on a page or in the site template they take a second to reflect and consider a few things, how important is it to point out that site right now, is the reference relevant to the site or page and how many of those references have they put out the site pages recently.
Following the same logic of this whole article, the progress of links in a site and the rate of link acquisition should follow some organic reason, going back to the natural world once again imagine how many people would have recommended you for anything when you were one year old, how many when you got into school?, how many people knew you when you were fourteen years old and would have linked to you. As you will quickly realize you own reputation took years to build, and it was built block after block, making solid network connections with every new link you acquired.
Exercise the same thing with a site link and you are almost guaranteed success, only that many do not have the patience or the consistency of doing this link work on a regular basis, and that is exactly why this article is titled “lazy links”, if you are a webmaster with one site and one idea to promote the next promotion plan should be easy to execute. Set a time once a month and dedicate 3 hours to link work, write other webmasters in your industry, send emails to bloggers who write about products similar to yours, submit your site to directories and even publish an article with information about your product, all of this will gain you links.
The consistent rate of adding links will pay back in a huge way, but you will need to be patient and stick with this task, in a year or 18 months you will see it work, the only thing is that you will have to remember where you started so you could compare the stats. For all other webmasters, ones that own many sites and need to promote all of them at once, this is a much more complicated project and it calls for great focus and orderly working systems.
