  • Scenic Wildflower Tour at Henry Coe State Park
If you like colorful landscapes, Wildflowers are bountiful! Spring is the peak season to visit. Spring's fresh green grass is augmented by lots of wildflowers, including great patches of baby blue-eyes, creamcups, fiddlenecks, popcorn flowers, redmaids, johnny-jump-up, and johnnytuck. Squirrels have constructed elaborate burrows under oaks and across the meadows, so you will probably see plenty of the scampering bushy tailed animals near these colonies. Look in the dirt for deer, coyote, and bobcat tracks, and be aware that wild pigs are sometimes spotted as well.

Coe Park, located in the hills east of Morgan Hill, is one of the largest state parks in Northern California, with over 80,000 acres of wild open spaces. Deep canyons with seasonal creeks and pools divide long ridges covered with grasslands, mixed woods and chaparral. Artificial lakes and stock ponds provide habitat for waterfowl and red-winged blackbirds, as well as fishing for bass and panfish. Wildlife in the park includes deer, turkeys, feral pigs, coyotes, bobcats and mountain lions, and a spectacular wildflower display blossoms every spring. Views from the ridgetops include the Santa Clara Valley, the surrounding Hamilton Range, and, on very clear days, the Sierras.

Both the Santa Clara Valley and the Santa Cruz Mountains can be viewed. Groves of ponderosa pines, gigantic manzanitas, and oak stud the hillsides. A windmill sits off to the side of the trail. Numerous ponds, springs, creeks, and swimming holes throughout the park provide opportunities for cooling off on a hot day. China Hole, Coe's most popular swimming hole, is the halfway point on a 10-mile loop on Madrone Springs and China Hole Trails.

Once on the other side of the creek, we’ll pass through the first meadow, which in late winter may be dotted with popcorn flowers, baby blue eyes, and fiddlenecks. Sycamore trees line the creek, and their leaves litter the ground at most crossings. Rolling hills, dotted with deciduous oaks, creep uphill to the north. On the right side of the trail, you might see lots and lots of gooseberry, as well as California coffeeberry and snowberry.

  • Scenic Waterfall at Pfeiffer State Park, Big Sur
The park has 1006 acres of redwoods, conifers, oaks, sycamores, cottonwoods, maples, alders and willows - plus open meadows. Wildlife includes black-tail deer, gray squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and birds, such as water ouzels and belted kingfishers.

Cruzers can enjoy the many scenic trails, including several nature trails.

Cruz along Pfeiffer Redwood Creek as it features some of the finest redwood groves in the Big Sur region and includes several scenic bridges across Pfeiffer Redwood Creek.

A 60 foot high waterfall at the end of the trail is a scenic highlight. A wooden platform at the base of the falls is a fine place to rest, meditate or have a picnic lunch.

  • Monarch Butterfly Natural Preserve Tour
The park's Monarch Grove provides a temporary home for over 100,000 Monarchs each winter. From mid-October through the end of February, the Monarchs form a "city in the trees." The areas mild ocean air and eucalyptus grove provide a safe roost until spring. In the spring and summer, the butterflies live in the valley regions west of the Rocky Mountains where milkweed, the only plant a Monarch caterpillar eats, is plentiful. The Monarch Grove has been declared a Natural Preserve, thus protecting the Monarchs and their winter habitat from human encroachment or harm. This is the only State Monarch Preserve in California.

Monarchs begin arriving in October and most are gone by the first week of March. The grove contains eucalyptus trees, which are located in a canyon, providing the Monarch needed shelter from the wind. These winter flowering trees are also a convenient food source for the butterfly. On chilly days when the temperature drops below 60 degrees, the butterflies cluster together in the eucalyptus trees for warmth.

The park maintains a demonstration milkweed patch where visitors may view Monarch eggs, caterpillars and chrysalides. For about half a year, milkweed is the Monarch's home, super market and maternity ward. The Monarch larva eats only the milkweed plant.

The Monarch Grove has been declared a Natural Preserve, thus protecting the Monarchs and their winter habitat from human encroachment or harm. This is the only State Monarch Preserve in California. Access to the preserve area is limited to a handicap accessible boardwalk and observation area.
